On April 25th 1999, the history of China and the history of mankind turned to a new page. Thousands on thousands of ordinary Chinese citizens meditated in silence outside of the leadership compound to appeal peacefully to the world's most dictatorial power. Despite the knowledge that they might bring trouble upon themselves, they sincerely expressed their belief and their simple wish that the government respect their rights and their freedom of cultivation. This incident happened in Beijing, those participants were Falun Dafa practitioners who believed in the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance."
The April 25 event soon became major news and spread to every corner of the world. People were shocked. The same government who had crushed and killed a lot of people who appealed to it. What strength enabled these ordinary citizens to challenge the government in a country where people had experienced all the political movements and great catastrophes, in the nation that had been ruled by an atheist communist government who destroyed all spiritual and moral beliefs and faith, and in a society that had been filled with materialism and money worship? What faith made these people so pure and brave? We all knew what happened later on. The head of this autocratic government finally revealed its evil nature. An unprecedented persecution, like that of the Cultural Revolution, began. A simmering battle of good and evil began. On the surface, the two sides were so greatly disparate. The evil side had all the powerful state apparatus, the vast state-run media, a huge police, intelligence and military establishment, and huge financial support. The other side had only the unshakable belief in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance."
One month passed while group after group of Falun Gong practitioners appealed to the government, taking the risk of being arrested, beaten, and sent to labor camp or jailed. One year passed and Falun Gong practitioners kept holding defiant demonstrations in Tiananmen Square despite the risk to their lives. Today, three years later, after thousands of Falun Gong practitioners have been subjected to severe physical abuse, detainment and death due to torture, practitioners remain unyielding in the spirit of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance." More and more new practitioners joined this spiritual movement, more and more people understand and support Falun Gong. Banners of "Falun Dafa is Good!" are flying everywhere. The song "Falun Dafa is Good" prevails. Lies have short legs and evil has no place to hide. We truly feel the greatness and the strength of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance."
Maybe pure gold only proves its worth in a blazing fire, a haughty plum blossom only shows its beauty in a world of snow. Maybe only a victory against the odds is highly valued, and only the transcendent spirit will be eternal. No matter how ordinary the event seemed to be when it occurred, no matter what difficulties and obstacles lay ahead, the April 25 appeal has certainly erected an immortal monument in all history. Its spirit will always shine with increasing splendor. It will inspire all people who believe in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance."
