I smile---all beings awaken.
I smile---Dafa begins spreading.
I smile---the ferry sets off.
I smile---all beings have hope.

When I first read this poem from Master Li’s poetry collection Hongyin, it seemed to me that I understood the meaning of the words, but I always felt that I did not understand the connotation behind them. During one Dafa activity, I was standing on the sidewalk holding a banner with another practitioner which said: 'SOS: Urgent Rescue of Falun Gong Practitioners Persecuted in China.” The number of practitioners persecuted to death was also posted on the banner. Near us, there was a traffic light. When the red light was on, all the vehicles had to stop. The banner attracted the attention of many people in the vehicles. Some people’s faces showed an expression of concern. Thinking that as long as ordinary people saw the banner and developed feelings of compassion, the eternality of their lives could possibly be preserved, I began to smile.
When I realized that I was smiling, I suddenly remembered Master’s 'Smile', and I understood some of the connotations in the poem. On the surface, a smile expresses a person's sentiment. It results from one’s wish being fulfilled, and therefore he is happy. This is an ordinary person's smile. The smile of an enlightened being contains the incomparable mercy. It does not have any sense of selfishness. What does our Master smile about? He smiles that all beings are awakened, Dafa begins to spread, the ferry sets off, and all beings have hope. Master’s smile is completely for the beings of the universe. Engulfed in our Teacher’s profound mercy, I wept.
This is my personal understanding, please kindly correct the incorrect points.
