In the past, when I read the story in Zhuan Falun of how a practitioner won a junior bike in a lottery and then went back to return the money, I did not quite see what the big deal was. I finally began to understand the real meaning of that story when I read the following passage from Master Li, “Once a Dafa disciple has done what he shouldn't do, if he isn't able to truly realize its severity and redeem the losses he has brought to Dafa, everything and that millions upon millions of years' wait will be fulfilled according to the vows made before history” (from Master's new article: “Dafa is Indestructible”).
The focus of our cultivation is our heart. “No attachment or fear could possibly enable you to reach Consummation” (from Master's new article: “Dafa is Indestructible”). We should not do anything we are not supposed to do because it looks like a small matter on the surface. Many attachments surface with the ways that we choose to handle small things.
Let’s take the cultivator who let his child play the lottery game as an example. At the beginning, he thought it was just a game to entertain his child and there was nothing wrong with it. The child promptly won the second prize – a luxury junior bike. Obtaining a tangible reward was already a test in itself. That practitioner happened to have great enlightenment quality. He immediately realized that by allowing his child to play the lottery game, he was already hoping to gain things that he was not supposed to get. But before he had a chance to react to the first test, the second test came – when he told his child not to claim the prize, “the child cried and screamed terribly.” In the end, he “could not do anything about it but take the bike home.” He did not pass the second test because of his attachment to Qing (emotions). Once he returned home, he gradually became enlightened to what he did wrong. As a result, he was able to improve his Xinxing by a great deal. Since the most important thing for a cultivator is to cultivate his heart, now that he had things figured out in his heart, was the matter then settled? The laws of the universe are fair to all beings, and cannot possibly make an exception for any single person. When a person has done something wrong, he must take steps to make up for it. Even among everyday people, when one commits a wrong deed, only a bad person would tell himself that he would never do it again and forget about the whole thing while a good person would do his best to redeem the loss. What is especially important here are the words “redeem the loss.” In the above example of playing the lottery, the practitioner did not think, “I have obtained something that I am not supposed to get. So I will flush the money down the toilet to make it even.” After a great deal of thinking, the practitioner decided to donate the money to his workplace.
On the surface, what happened was a small matter. But we cannot judge whether a matter is big or small, right or wrong based on the rules and thoughts of everyday people. An everyday person does not think there is anything wrong with playing the lottery and would think that the practitioner who donated his lottery winning to his workplace was crazy. However, a practitioner needs to make decisions based on the principles of the universe.
Every cultivator has accumulated a great deal of karma in his previous lives. Master has taken away and borne a majority of it. The cultivator will pay back the rest of the karma himself, and along the way improve his Xinxing. But what about the karma that one accumulates for damaging the Fa? How can this type of karma be eliminated? The benevolent Teacher has given the practitioners yet another opportunity to pay back this karma by asking them to make redemption in the human world.
