The Critical Nature of "Google China" and Countermeasures

[PureInsight.org] In January of
2006, the biggest Internet search engine provider in the world, the
Google company, through its server in China, google.cn, complied with
the requirements of the evil Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by
incorporating filtering in their search engine. Let me give a few
examples. For instance, using  google.com to search for "Dajiyuan"
(Chinese Epochtimes), the Dajiyuan website and associated sites will be
shown in the result in other countries. But using google.cn from the
same company, searching for "Dajiyuan" returns the result of "no such
website can be found!" Instead, the result only shows all the websites
that are opposed to and attack Dajiyuan. If the search were for "Falun
Gong" or "64" (referring to the CCP’s massacre of college students at Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989), and other such sites, there will be entirely different results. Comparing the results is indeed startling!

In the past the Google website was filtered out by the CCP authorities
and it was extremely difficult for the people in China to access the
website. Google's service enables the user to access all the
information in the Internet and builds an index of the search. But
approximately half of the websites in China couldn’t be detected by
Google as they are filtered out by the authorities of the CCP. Hence
the people outside China cannot obtain complete information for the
Chinese websites by using the Google search engine. With Google server
now located in China, there is more information for the Chinese people
using the Google facility. But they  are unable to obtain complete
information because Google acceded to the demands of the CCP and
incorporated filtering in their search engine. Users of google.com
outside China can still receive all the information by using the
unfiltered Google search engine, but in China, while users can use
google.cn to do searches, the information is incomplete due to the
filtering.

In fact, if one does not understand that there are certain criteria
behind the technology of searching in the net, one will not realize the
magnitude of the problem. I will give a brief introduction of the
background of this technology to make it easily understood.

The Advanced Nature of the Google Search Technology

The founders of the Google Company, Larry Page and Sergey Brin were
both Ph.D. research students in the Computer Department at Stanford
University in 1995, undertaking research in search engines for the
Internet. As they were in the process of doing that research, the
biggest search engine providers were AltaVista, Excite, Lycos and so
on, including the Yahoo search engine established by David Filo and
Jerry Yang, their fellow researchers. At that time the speed of the
search engines and the results obtained were not ideal since the
results of the searches were displayed according to the frequency of
the webpage appearing on the Internet and were also in accordance with
the key phrases entered. The technology at that stage recognized the
level of the "interrelated nature" of the key phrases. But actually,
that would include a lot of the webpages not related to the key phrases
of the searches especially when the search phrases were brief or short.
Hence what were listed as the foremost webpages were not what were
being looked for. It took endurance over many searches and analyses of
the results to find what was being searched for.

In view of those problems, Larry and Sergey designed a new method of
displaying the results of the search. Everyone knows that there are
many links on webpages, that is, web site addresses that we can click
on to establish further connections. They reckoned that if a webpage
that one is looking for is included as a "link" site in many other
webpages, then it would be likely be the page one is looking for. With
that in mind, they established a grading system, with other factors
included, in the way the results were displayed. As an example, the
websites are graded at different levels. A media web site that is
visited by many people will be graded as high level and at the same
time those web sites that are included as "links" by this web site will
also be graded as high level web sites. Also, if there were more key
phrases included in the search, and if the web site appears in the
result seem to be near to what is being searched, then it will be
included as high level in the grading.

The grading system is very easy to understand and it is very simple,
but to implement it is difficult because there will be many websites
with the same links. In order to have a complete grading, the whole
Internet must therefore be accessed! We note that in the Google search
system there is a link named "cached" file for every search. This is a
copy of the links that the search found. Sometimes the links found
could have been deleted from the original website, but are still
recorded in the Google copy and by clicking on the link in the copy,
the site can still be connected with. Such a "Cached" link had never
been used previously. The search engines at that period were all using
the index system of the Internet, for example, Yahoo employed many
editors to collect the various domains of information that were of
interest to the Internet users. To download everything from the
Internet was an unthinkable thing, as the information in the Internet
is always being altered. It is necessary to keep up-dating all the
information in the Internet. There are many new websites being added
all the time. At that time, the two founders of Google steadfastly
stuck to their conviction that it was possible to access the whole of
the Internet as there was a "Moore's Law" in the field of computers. In
1965, one of the founders of Intel, Gordon Moore postulated: The number
of transistors on a chip (integrated circuit of the same surface area)
doubles every 24 months In fact, it is so. It is not only confined to
the integrated circuits but, also, the materials used in hard disks
storage technology and compact discs were also rapidly keeping pace
with the integrated circuit technology. Coupled with those advances,
the speed of transmission of data in the Internet was also increasing
rapidly. Hence, Larry and Sergey considered that it was not a problem
to access the whole of the Internet. But on the other hand, it would
require a huge computer to deal with it. Their solution was to use
multiple computers, that is, to distribute the load to many smaller
computers. They used all their research funding to purchase low priced
computer components and built their own computers. This was a big drain
on their financial resources compared with what other companies spent
for the purchase of the necessary hardware.

In September, 1998, they received one million U.S. dollars of high-risk
contributions from friends and risk-taking businesses. They registered
the Google Company. In June, 1999, two risk-taking business people
invested twenty-five million U.S. dollars in the company. Google had
never advertised the company but its reputation for usefulness was
spread by word of mouth and eventually it became very popular amongst
academics. Subsequently, the media reported on the company and they won
several important awards in their field of business.

At the beginning of this century, many Internet companies that were not
making any profit went bankrupt. Those who offered advertising as a
basis for income became less and less popular because there were too
many advertisements that had no relationship with the users and the
rate of access to these sites were not high. Those types of
advertisements did not achieve as beneficial results as those in the
newspapers and television networks. Google's mode of advertisement was
unique: there were no advertisements on their main page. They only
published advertisements with phrases that were key words in searches,
published very few media type advertisement to avoid slowing responses
to searches, and they charged their fees according to the frequency of
clicking on the advertisements. This system of advertisements was
welcomed by the advertisers as well as the search engine users as the
users did not have to look at a large amount of unrelated
advertisements and all the users received was useful information. The
advertisers were happy because their advertisements were directly
accessed by people who wished to receive that information and they were
told the exact number of times the sites were accessed. With such a
fine search engine and such a good model in their mode of advertising,
the Company gained a huge income. On  September 19, 2004, Google
became a public company listed in the stock exchange, and collected one
billion six hundred million U.S. dollars for the shares sold. The
market value of the shares owned by Google is twenty-three billion U.S.
dollars.

The Significance of the Political Strategy of the Leading Search Technology of Google

At the beginning, the founders of Google found it difficult to attract
risky investments in their company as few people knew the great
significance of this type of search technology. In 2000, when Google
was probing the possibility of entering the stock market, Microsoft
realized its significance and sought to co-operate with Google or merge
with it, but the proposal was rejected. At present, the technology for
the search service, MSN, utilized by Microsoft, is akin to that used by
Google, but it has a long way to catch up with it. Moreover, Yahoo is
already cooperating with Google and is using the search technology
provided by Google.

As the use of the personal computers began to expand, Bill Gates of
Microsoft entered the market. His Windows software secured a large
portion of the personal computer operating system market. As the
personal computers dropped in price, its use became more popular. Being
the supplier of the operating system software for the personal
computers, Microsoft determined the way the computer would be used. It
is not a secret that there are backdoors in the Microsoft Windows
software that can be used to enter the personal computer to steal the
passwords and personal data. Hence, some government departments and
some departments that operate under strict security are now adopting
the open source code Linux operating system software.

If we say that since the era of the use of personal computers began,
Microsoft has determined the way how personal computers are used, then
as more and more people access the Internet and search for information,
the search technology that is controlled by Google can be said to be
the one that determines how the Internet can be searched. It is claimed
that this is the information era and the information available is
expanding at an explosive rate. If there were no way of looking for and
indexing the information, then the information could not be used by the
people. At present, Google has commenced to digitize all the
information available that can be digitized, from all the libraries and
store them in a computer. Subsequently, an index of all the information
will be created. The ultimate aim is to digitize all human knowledge,
index it, and provide the search facility. When that day arrives,
Google would be controlling the way we can access any and all of the
information of the human race. Such a power of controlling information
is far greater than the power of Microsoft’s controlling the operating
system. At present, the economic power of Google is reflected by its
market value. This is similar to the previous power of controlling
water resources, military technologies, nuclear technologies, and
petroleum resources. This power to control information is no small
matter in comparison to the power to control the economy, politics and
the military. The nations in Europe have recognized such a threat. Last
year, the European Union approved the proposal of President Chirac and
officially decided to create the European search engine by themselves.
The search engine shall be known as "Quaero", a Latin word meaning
"search." At this moment, the European Union has formed a transnational
coalition to develop this project. It consists of many large
telecommunication enterprises and scientific, academic organizations.

Initially, the Yahoo search service listed the names of those
advertisers that paid more fees forward in the index of results of the
search. Originally, Yahoo despised such inclinations. When Google
developed their search service, their original aim was to satisfy the
customers' requirements. There were no inclinations of any kind, and
showed the results according to the frequency a website was accessed in
the Internet. But today in China, Google has completely violated their
own initial principle and is heading toward the wicked extreme in
providing information to conform to the requirements of the evil Party
and by filtering off all just and righteous information. The google.cn
website and the central television station China controlled by the CCP,
are identical in nature, both being the tools of the evil Party. To a
gigantic nation like China, such actions by those two organizations
will determine the direction the great populace of China would take.
Hence, the extent and severity of the problem is immense.

This month, the founder of Google, Sergey, at an international economic
conference absolved himself regarding the actions of Google in China.
He said that the laws in China prevent their search results to be
totally displayed, and even pointed out that there is also such
preventive measure in France and Germany that forbids the public
transmission of Nazi information. He even mentioned that he was born in
USSR and therefore he understood the problems that caused such a
controversy. But he drew a conclusion, saying: "I feel that our
decision is justifiable." There is no logic in what he said. Perhaps
that was only an excuse but he had other reasons, like considering the
American government politics or strategy, in entering and leaving China
and also to index more information from the Chinese Internet websites.
But such an action is disastrous to human rights and the vast majority
of the Chinese population.

Countermeasures to Google's Policies Regarding China

Looking at the present, there is no problem with google.com and this
issue must first of all be made known to as many people as possible in
China and let them boycott google.cn. They should break through the
blockade of the overseas google.com. Dongtai.net and others are the
developers of the software to breakthrough the blockade. Service
providers should encourage the Internet users within China to access
google.com as one of their foremost sites. In this way, they will
actually be disabling the google.cn site.

Many founders of Internet companies are technological personnel now in
their thirties. Their success in the enterprises is not in aiming for
wealth or power, and because of their meager experience in life, they
may not have realized their great responsibility toward society.
Therefore, besides various people defending human rights, human rights
organizations that openly protest and condemn the action, they can
organize into a united federation to canvass the founder of Google, the
chief executive officer, and other members and staff of that
enterprise. Those business enterprises in the United States that have
connections can canvass the shareholders of Google and those academics
with connections can gather their lecturers and fellow students to
privately canvas Larry and Sergey, Yahoo and other large Internet
service providers. Stop Google’s compliance with the evil policies of
China. On the other hand, they can be encouraged to invest in the
companies that are producing software that assist in the breakthrough
of the blockade in China and amend their fault with some good deeds.

Next month, the United States Congress will hold a hearing to obtain
evidence regarding the problem with Google. Because Google possesses a
virtual monopoly in this advanced technology with strategic
significance, the U.S. government could have been involved with foreign
policies of Google. Hence, the various human rights organization should
also canvass the U.S. government. This erroneous action has
strengthened the CCP in their lies to, and evil rule of, the Chinese
nation. It has violated the aim of the U.S. global strategy and has
completely obstructed the progress of world peace and democracy.
