[PureInsight.org] On an evening in February 2001, I sat quietly at home, thoroughly enjoying practicing Falun Gong's sitting meditation when the telephone rang. I picked up the phone and heard a Chinese woman speaking in timid and weak voice, as if she was careful not to scare me.
"My name is Nancy. May I ask you to teach me Falun Gong's exercises?"
"Of course, may I ask why you are interested in learning Falun Gong?"
"Well, I am extremely frail. I can't even wear skirts in the summer because I cannot stand any wind chill. In fact, I have to wear cotton socks in the summer to keep my feet warm. I am so frail that I have to rest in bed for a while after I make a meal. It is because during the month after I gave birth I did not have proper care. I heard that Falun Gong is very good for improving one's health, so I would like to give it a try."
"Have you heard of the Chinese Communist government's hate propaganda against Falun Gong?"
"Yes, I have. When I went to the Chinese Embassy to extend my Chinese passport, I saw a lot of posters defaming Falun Gong. But I thought, 'If Falun Gong were as horrible as the Chinese Communist Party portrays, why would so many people in the free world outside of China practice Falun Gong?' I decided to learn Falun Gong and make my own judgment."
"I think you are very wise to make your own judgment, instead of believing in rumors. Do you drive? You are welcome to pick up a copy of Zhuan Falun from my home."
"I am sorry. I haven't learned to drive yet. I have been staying at home because of my health."
"I see. Why don't I drive to your place and deliver the book? Where do you live?"
When Nancy told me her address, I burst into laughter. It turned out that we lived on the same street, and she lived less than 500 meters from me.
On the following day, I brought a copy of Zhuan Falun to Nancy's home. However, she only opened the door partially because she was trying not to let too much cold air from February inside the house. I could only take a glimpse of half of her beautiful and kind face. Watching her body wrapped with layers of clothes reminds me of a Chinese woman who has just given birth and has to guard against wind. This was how frail Nancy was when I first met her.
Two days later, Nancy called and told me that she had read Zhuan Falun once, and now she was ready to learn the Falun Gong exercises. I told her our outdoor group practice schedule at the riverside park. February is the coldest month in the winter. Although we practice the exercise in the afternoon, the weather of February in the afternoon in Canada is still very cold. I don't know how Nancy charged up her courage, but she told me she decided to go practice Falun Gong exercises outdoors at the riverside park. Thus she finally stepped out of her home. After the first practice, she exclaimed happily, "Oh, I feel wonderful. I felt very strong energy flowing through my body. I have never felt so warm." Thus Nancy started her Falun Gong cultivation practice.
In the summer of 2001, Nancy took out the skirts that had been buried at the bottom of her luggage and started wearing skirts again. She became the beautiful Nancy she used to be before she gave birth.
In 2001, Jiang Zemin and his goons kept escalating their tortures against Falun Gong practitioners in China. When the news of Masanjia Forced Labor Camp stripping and throwing 18 female Falun Gong practitioners into the male inmates' cells where they were repeatedly subjected to rape became known to us, Falun Gong practitioners worldwide protested Masanjia Forced Labor Camp's beastly crime in many different forms. Falun Gong practitioners in Toronto had a group hunger strike protest in front of the Chinese Embassy. When Nancy heard their plan of hunger strike protest, she went to Toronto and joined the protest. At the time, Nancy had practiced Falun Gong for only half a year.
Some people could not identify with her cause and asked why she decided to join the hunger strike protest. Nancy replied, "People who practice Falun Gong and benefit from Falun Gong like me are suffering from atrocious tortures. How could I ignore their plights and stay at home? If I have the slightest conscience as a human being, I should do something to help them."
In the following summer, Jiang Zemin, the man that started the persecution against Falun Gong, made a trip to Iceland. Falun Gong practitioners around the world unanimously decided to go to Iceland and to peacefully appeal to Jiang Zemin for the end of the persecution. Nancy and several fellow practitioners who could afford the trip made the trip together. When they were transiting flights in the U.S., the Icelandic Airline denied them of boarding the plane because their names appear on a list supplied by the Chinese Communist government. They were flying with Icelandic Air, but the list was supplied by the Chinese Communist government. Apparently, the Chinese Communist government had already poisoned the Icelandic government and goaded the government into persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Nancy and other practitioners heard that Falun Gong practitioners worldwide had been denied boarding of their flights to Iceland by the Icelandic Air in many different airports. What were they going to do?
Falun Gong practitioners were not intimidated. Instead, they became all the more aware of their mission and started to clarify the truth to Icelandic Embassies worldwide. In a few days, the Icelandic government and the Icelandic Embassies worldwide learned the truth about Falun Gong and Jiang Zemin's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The Icelandic Air began to board Falun Gong practitioners, but there was little time left before Jiang Zemin left Iceland. Besides, there were very few seats available for the Falun Gong practitioners on standby for the seats. There were not enough seats for everyone. All the fellow practitioners traveling with Nancy decided to let Nancy board the flight, so Nancy got on the plane and arrived in Iceland in time to join the peaceful appeal. Before she boarded the plane, she burst into tears, watching the fellow practitioners' faces registered with purity and kindness. They gave up their own interests and desire at the most pivotal moment. They thought only of others at the most pivotal moment. You will find such rare and pure altruism among Falun Gong practitioners!
Iceland is a small and quiet country, but everything changed when Jiang Zemin visited it. The Icelandic people are kind and straightforward. Subjected to the false reports of the media, they had mistaken Falun Gong practitioners as violent dissidents. But when they saw with their own eyes that Falun Gong practitioners were peaceful, rational and amiable, they knew they had been deceived by their own government. When they learned that the truth was that Falun Gong practitioners had been subject to Jiang Zemin's persecution, they became angry. The people in Iceland spoke up, condemning its government for its human rights violation against Falun Gong practitioners. They organized a rally to demand the Icelandic government to kick Jiang Zemin, the dictator, out of the country. Next the Icelandic people kept coming to Falun Gong practitioners, asking to learn Falun Gong. Nancy was extremely busy each day while she was in Iceland. She often burst into tears because she was touched by the kindness of Icelandic people.
Each attempt by Jiang Zemin and his goons to hamper Falun Gong from being known to the world turns out to be a free and positive promotion of Falun Gong. Jiang Zemin and his goons thought they would intimate Falun Gong practitioners with their terrorist acts, such as supplying the Icelandic Air with the name list of Falun Gong practitioners or creating vicious rumors about Falun Gong, but they did not know they would never be able to alter Falun Gong practitioners' faith with their thuggish acts. Their terrorist acts only reinforced Falun Gong practitioners' faith in the opposite: Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance.
When Nancy returned from Iceland, she told us about her trip to Iceland in tears. She became all the more diligent in her cultivation practice, and continues to conduct herself according to Teacher's teachings. She finished her bachelor's and master's degrees and made a lot of friends in school. She and her classmates helped each other in school and everyday life. Naturally, she takes every opportunity to clarify the truth to her Mainland Chinese classmates and the Chinese people in our area.
Nancy finished her master's degree in the summer of 2004, and was ready to begin her professional career. Nancy is now confident and healthy. I have difficulty associating her with the frail Nancy I met in February of 2001 who had to stay indoors in layers of clothes throughout the year.
