I was forced to leave my home to avoid further persecution, and rented a place along with several other Falun Gong practitioners. During the morning of May 14, 2002 I plugged the electric rice cooker into the power outlet to make steamed rice. Shortly afterwards, the power indicator on the rice cooker went off by itself. At first I thought this brand new rice cooker must be defective, but then I smelled a burning stench from an easterly room in the apartment. Walking into that room, the sight I beheld shocked me. A power outlet was on fire, and the fire was quickly spreading upward toward the wallpapered ceiling! As an electrical engineer, I immediately knew that I had to turn off the main electric switch for this apartment floor. But I was new to this building and didn't know where I find the main electric switch in such a short time.
I ran out of the apartment but I did not find any electrical box anywhere. I thought of calling for help, but when the firefighters came into our apartment and saw what was in there, they would surely know that this apartment belonged to a group of Falun Gong practitioners. How could I risk everyone's safety by calling for help? I gave up the idea of calling for help and mulled over other possibilities to extinguish the fire. When I ran back to the room, the fire was rapidly escalating. My first reaction was to grab a large bowl and filled it with water, but just before I was going to pour it over the flaming electrical outlet, I suddenly realized that I mustn't do so because water conducts electricity!
At this critical moment of life and death I suddenly thought of Teacher. I thought, "I am Teacher's disciple. Why didn't I think of asking Teacher for help?" I happened to stand right next to Teacher's framed photograph that on the table leaning against the wall. I turned to Teacher's photograph, closed my eyes, put my palms together in front of my chest to show respect, and said in my heart, "Teacher, your disciple would like to ask for your help." Then I opened my eyes, only to find that the flames began to diminish by themselves to an extent that I simply put out the fire with one simple sweep of the broomstick.
Afterwards I used a professional electric device to examine the electrical outlet, to determine the underlying cause for this mishap. The electrical circuits' plastic insulation had melted, causing the wires in the electrical circuits to have direct contact with each other, resulting in a short circuit and fire.
If it had not been for Teacher's assistance and protection, I cannot imagine what would have happened to the apartment, my fellow practitioners and me. In hindsight, I think the incident of this fire was a test of my faith in Teacher. It is very critical to maintain righteous thoughts and faith in face of danger. Most importantly, we must remember that we are Dafa disciples and we have Teacher protecting us at all times.
