[PureInsight.org] When I first met Ms. Lin's mother at their home, I was astonished to find that Mrs. Lin was a tall slender lady with alabaster skin and jet-black hair. When Mrs. stood next to Ms. Lin who was in graduate school, she looked like Ms. Lin's sister and not at all like her mother.
"How should I call you?" I asked politely.
"Xiao Lin's mom will do," she answered in a southern Chinese accent and with a smile.
"Xiao Lin's mom?" I questioned. I was surprised by her answer because I was not so sure if it was an appropriate title for this beautiful woman.
"Sure. Just call me Xiao Lin's mom."
Apparently, she did not mind being called a mom, which would certainly reveal her age.
[Note: In China, "Xiao" is a common Chinese nickname for younger people and it is appended to their first name. For example, a young man named Wu Minli is known as Xiao Wu among his friends and colleagues.]
From the kitchen, Xiao Lin's mom chatted with us while preparing the meal for us. I did not see her working busy as a bee in the kitchen, but soon she presented a full table of gorgeous and delectable Chinese dishes. We took the time to admire the food before we started to savor each of the marvelous dishes.
Xiao Lin's mom started to cultivate in Falun Gong in China. Since Jiang Zemin and his henchmen started to persecute Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, she became a target of the persecution as well. Fortunately, Xiao Lin managed to rescue her by getting her to Canada to avoid additional persecution. As soon as Xiao Lin's mom moved to Canada, she has been demonstrating the Falun Gong exercises and distributing flyers containing the truth about Falun Gong and the persecution against Falun Gong in front of the Parliament Hill building every day. She does so in all kinds of weather conditions. Parliament Hill is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ottawa. Most tourist groups from China will stop to visit this tourist attraction. Therefore, Falun Gong practitioners in Canada have been coming to the Parliament Hill every day in the past four years, beginning on July 20, 1999, to clarify the truth to the Chinese tourists visiting Parliament Hill.
Xiao Lin's mom is an amiable and friendly person, hence many Chinese tourists took the truth-clarification flyers from her and were interested in talking with her. Occasionally when she met people who were afraid and shook their heads or waved their hands for various reasons to refuse the offer of the truth-clarification flyers Xiao Lin's mom would offer them a copy of The Epoch Times newspaper. She would say, "What about reading the Chinese newspaper in our area? This is an overseas Chinese newspaper popular in the Chinese community." These Chinese tourists would usually talk to themselves and say out loud, "It should be okay to read newspapers," and then take the newspaper.
On March 5, 2002, Falun Gong practitioners in Changchun City, the Capital City of Jilin Province, broadcast video programs showing the truth about Falun Gong and the truth of the infamous self-immolation act at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. An enraged Jiang Zemin ordered to "kill without pardon" those responsible for the broadcast. Over the next few days, more than 5,000 people believed to be practitioners of Falun Gong were detained during an all-out and unprecedented police sweep of Changchun while the city was under near-martial law. In order to help rescue Falun Gong practitioners in Changchun City, Xiao Lin's mom joined over 50 Falun Gong practitioners in Canada in a 36-hour group hunger strike in front of Parliament Hill that same month. It was freezing in March that year. The ground was frozen, and the stout wind made it even colder. Under the gloomy sky, Xiao Lin's mom and other fellow practitioners sat in a neatly arranged square formation in front of the Parliament Hill building. All of them sat in the full lotus position to do the Falun Gong meditation. They sat on top of ice and wore blue ribbon banners diagonally across their torsos with the message, "Hunger Strike Appeal." Together they emitted the spirits of tranquility, solemnity, and righteousness. The members of the Parliament were deeply touched, and many extended their hands to help rescue practitioners in Changchun City.
Xiao Lin's mom is a highly educated intellectual with artistic talents. She helped design and organize many art performance programs in Canada. I first saw the art performance gala she helped with in 2002. It was a Chinese New Year Gala sponsored by the Friends of Falun Gong. She designed and directed a "Cheongsam Fashion Show." Cheongsam is a dress of Southern Chinese origin with a slit skirt and a mandarin collar. Female Falun Gong practitioners volunteered as models to demonstrate the different styles of cheongsam. Some of cheongsam were very ornate and lavish, others were pure and elegant and some were of classical style, while others were modernized. While I admired the slim and tall models walking like elegant antelopes on the runway, I thought of lines from a Chinese poem titled "An Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River" that praised the elegance and beauty of the Goddess of the Luo River.
I said, "Only people who cultivate in Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance are capable of creating such a beautiful program." I could not help praise their beauty in admiration.
"Why?" asked the lady sitting next to me.
"Because those who cultivate in Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance have the most graceful disposition," I answered.
"You are right!" she said while she kept nodding in agreement.
