A Telephone Conversation with My Family in China (Part I)

Lin Chuan, a Falun Gong Practi

[PureInsight.org] Author's Note: Usually my family in China and I only talk about our everyday lives over the phone. We usually call each other to say we are doing fine. Obviously my father was asked to present some very specific questions in this telephone conversation.

Lin: Lin Chuan
Dad: Lin Chuan's father

Dad: Chuan, are you doing okay in the U.S. lately?
Lin: Shi Wei and I are doing fine as usual. [Note: Shi Wei is Lin Chuan's wife.]

Dad: I sent you an email not long ago. Have you received it?
Lin: No.

Dad: I asked you a few questions in the email.
Lin: What are the questions?

Dad: First of all, I wanted to ask about you practicing Falun Gong outside of your home. I heard that you are a Falun Gong coordinator in North America. Is that true?

Lin: Let me explain it to you. I was the first one to start practicing Falun Gong in my area. After having benefited from Falun Gong with health and spiritual improvements, I began to introduce Falun Gong to my friends. After they started practicing Falun Gong, they introduced it to their friends because they, too, feel it is a wonderful cultivation practice. Then their friends introduced it to their friends. After a while, there are many dozens of people practicing Falun Gong in my area. Because I was the first who started practicing Falun Gong, I was the one who brought the portable stereo to the group practice site and played the Falun Gong exercise music. Thus I became known as a "coordinator," but I was really just the person responsible for bringing the stereo.

Dad: Oh, I see. It is good for your health to practice Falun Gong. Your mother and I are not opposed to it. But I want you to practice Falun Gong at home. I don't want you to get involved in any political movement.

Lin: Dad, it is precisely because I am not interested in politics that I pursue a spiritual practice.

Dad: I heard that there was a new publication called The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party. What is that all about?
Lin: I have read it. It is a series of nine articles that truthfully describe the nature of the Communist Party from nine different perspectives. They listed all the heinous crimes that the Communist Party has committed for the past hundred years.

Dad: Oh? Did you help write any of these articles?
Lin: Given my limited knowledge and skills, do you really believe I am capable of writing a masterpiece work such as The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party?

Dad: Let me repeat myself. I don't want you to practice Falun Gong outside of your home. Never get involved in politics.

Lin: Dad, I did practice Falun Gong at home prior to 1999. Even when I practiced outdoors, I did it in the public parks. I have no idea when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) put me on its blacklist. They have not only openly threatened me, but they also confiscated my Chinese passport. Under the circumstances, how can I possibly sit idly at home and submit to their terrorism?

Dad: You know very well that you are asking for trouble if you try to stand up against the CCP. I have worked hard for my retirement pension, and your brothers and sisters have worked hard to keep their jobs… (Note from Lin Chuan: later I learned from other sources that China's Ministry of State Security has threatened to fire my siblings from their government jobs if they fail to make me renounce Falun Gong.)

Lin: Dad, it'd be great if I could sit comfortably at home and think about nothing but practicing Falun Gong. What kind of person in his right mind would enjoy standing outdoors in sub-zero temperature for hours [to clarify the truth for Falun Gong?] Did you know what type of dirty business the CCP has been doing outside of China?

Dad: What type of dirty business?

Lin: The CCP repeatedly spread slanderous lies about Falun Gong to foreign governments through diplomatic channels. It repeatedly hired overseas Chinese to vilify Falun Gong and to instigate overseas Chinese's hatred of Falun Gong. It has been trying to goad the entire world into becoming its partner in its crimes against Falun Gong. If other Falun Gong practitioners and I hadn't stepped forward to tell foreign governments, people of all walks of life and, especially, overseas Chinese people the truth about Falun Gong, we Falun Gong practitioners would not be able to live in any part of the world! If the CCP had not been persecuting Falun Gong, I would not have to step out to clarify the truth about Falun Gong. It is the CCP that had given me no alternative but to stand up for our most basic right. How can you reproach me now for it?

Dad: Well…change of subject. Where did you get the money to print Falun Gong's truth-clarification materials?
Lin: Whoever wishes to distribute the truth-clarification material to people will pay for the expenses out of his own pocket. Because of the CCP's constant threats and economic incentives, no foreign government has the courage to fund Falun Gong for its effort to end the persecution.

Dad: There has been very little news about Falun Gong lately. It seems very few people in China practice Falun Gong these days. How about your area?

Lin: Dad, haven't you learned something about the CCP's propaganda strategy after having lived in China for decades? If no one practices Falun Gong, why is the CCP so afraid of Falun Gong still? Falun Gong's smallest activity makes it tremble in fear. It only proves that there are so many people practicing Falun Gong that it has come to the end of its wits. You asked me if there are many people practicing Falun Gong outside of China. Just two months ago, the United States Congress passed a resolution condemning the CCP's harassment of Falun Gong practitioners on American soil, as well as of U.S. government officials who support Falun Gong. Nowadays the United Nations, the United States, Canada and many other free countries have granted religious asylum to those Falun Gong practitioners whose Chinese passports have been confiscated by the CCP. The CCP now faces enormous challenges inside and outside of China. It is only days before the CCP's collapse!

Dad: (Chuckling)
Lin: Speaking of the CCP's collapse, I am obliged to remind you as your son not to fall prey to the CCP's illusion of power. The CCP could collapse anytime, just like the former Soviet Union and former Communist regimes in Eastern Europe. After its collapse, the CCP will be brought to justice by the whole world for all its heinous crimes against the Chinese people. How will the world bring the CCP to justice? The same way they brought all the Nazis to justice after the collapse of the Nazis in Germany. You may think you will be spared because you have not committed any crimes. As long as you are a member of the CCP, you will be identified as an accomplice of the CCP in its past crimes. You can run, but you cannot hide forever. Why don't you prepare yourself a route for escape? There is a growing trend inside and outside of China to withdraw from the CCP. You may even withdraw from the CCP using a pseudonym. Would you like to think about it?

Dad: [Short silence] Let's not talk about this today. I will be pleased as long as you call home often and let us know you are well.
Lin: When the CCP stops the persecution, you and I will surely be well.

Dad: OK. I will talk to you later.
Lin: OK. Take care. Goodbye.
