[Pureinsight.org] A Dafa disciple’s abilities may not manifest—not because Dafa lacks such abilities, nor because Master has not given us these abilities, but because our xinxing is not yet up to the standard.
In Fa Teaching Given at the Metropolitan New York Fa Conference, from Collected Teachings Given Around the World, Volume III, Master told disciples: “You’re Dafa disciples, so the part of you that has completed cultivation meets the standard of gods fully, but your surface is still cultivating in Dafa. Basically, as Dafa disciples, you should display the state of a Dafa disciple in every respect.”
For many years, I was unable to truly understand this passage. At times I even felt resentment, thinking: Master told us then that we had this ability, so why can’t I feel anything myself?
Yesterday, while studying the FA, I suddenly understood: that is not what it means. I had understood it incorrectly.
The state of a Dafa disciple is not about showing that one is stronger than others. Previously, when I heard someone say that their state was good, I thought it meant holding a high-ranking position, having great wealth, owning a house and a car. But that is not the state of a Dafa disciple. Rather, it is to treat everything with immense compassion and kindness. One may not have much wealth or a high position, yet remain neither servile nor arrogant—calm, peaceful, and harmonious.
This is not only the state Dafa disciples should have. Among ordinary people, those who are genuinely in a good state also share similar qualities. Among the friends and the relatives I know, many people who truly have power and wealth are often very approachable and unpretentious. Only those who put on a show tend to appear aloof and put on airs everywhere.
Recently, my nephew was preparing to get engaged. My older brother knew that my financial circumstances were not good, so he offered to prepare and cover the cash gift for me, which I could then hand to my future niece-in-law. But I knew that this was money I should contribute myself. Therefore, I told my brother that I had already prepared it. He was very pleased to hear this; although he said nothing, I could tell from his expression. An older brother should naturally be respected. One should not appear superior to others just because one is a Dafa disciple, nor should one rely on others because one’s financial circumstances are poor.
The true state of a Dafa disciple is not to live better than others or to have money and power; of course, neither is it to be destitute. It is not to value wealth too highly or become attached to status. It is a kind of compassion and serenity, similar to the Buddhist idea of “conduct and thought become right” and a kind-hearted intention to consider others in everything.
Only today did I truly realize that the genuine state of a Dafa disciple is determined by xinxing. It is not merely a matter of wealth or status, but a manifestation of immense compassion and righteous thoughts.
This is only my personal understanding of the Fa, which I am sharing with fellow practitioners. If there is anything inadequate, please point it out so that we may improve together.
