During the past two years, amidst the brutal and inhumane persecution, many Falun Gong practitioners have been illegally arrested, brutally beaten, bashed with electric batons, detained and sentenced to jail. At the very least, 366 practitioners have been killed. Millions have been deprived of their right to work and study as well as other basic human rights. Yet, Falun Gong practitioners have remained peaceful in their appeal. With their amazing endurance and willpower, they have conducted themselves in a nonviolent and nonpolitical manner. They use peaceful conduct to call for justice and righteousness in the human world. Their enormous sacrifices have enabled more people to understand the truth of Falun Gong and recognize its magnificence. What has given them the strength to display the glory that a life is capable of reaching with such amazing endurance? If we say that the human spirit is capable of achieving miracles, then, what kind of spirit do Falun Gong practitioners possess?
Falun Gong is a great cultivation way of the Buddha School. Cultivators must follow the principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," upgrade their xinxing (mind or heart nature, moral quality) and reach higher realms in order to return to their origin and true selves. What sets Falun Gong apart is that its principles and exercises have truly enabled people to get rid of their attachments to personal gain, all kinds of desires, and aggression. It enables them to be strict with themselves, be virtuous, and maintain a compassionate heart and serene mind, while purifying their bodies and minds. Their ability to rise above the difficulties of daily life is well known. They go through their daily lives in an upright manner with a clear mind and no sense of pursuit. "Other people may treat us badly, but we do not treat others badly, nor do we treat other people as enemies" (From "A Brief Statement of Mine"). This is the fundamental reason that practitioners have been able to make peaceful appeals to tell people the truth about Falun Gong, even at the cost of their lives.
The awakening of one's own consciousness (true self) and the step-by-step assimilation to the nature of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance enables a being to attain the perfect realm in which the mind and body become one and possess extraordinary insights in a rational manner. The understanding of the real truth and the rationality acquired after possessing the truth are the reason that Falun Gong practitioners can form an enormous, cohesive and indestructible unit without having any organization or methods of maintaining administrative control. Rationality is a function of the consciousness of a living being. Under Jiang's regime, people's spirits have been suppressed. Only one voice could be heard throughout society from the highest to the lowest level. Newspapers and television stations have been reduced to tools of political power. They do not have any spirit of their own. They are not allowed to do anything other than meekly obey orders from the authorities. Thus, they adopt any and all means they can to spread rumors and stir up trouble.
Throughout its journey, Falun Gong has displayed a spirit of peacefulness and rationality that has never before been seen in Chinese history. Falun Gong practitioners' enormous compassion and forbearance have shaken the whole world. These precious virtues originate from the principles of Falun Gong and are natural manifestations of an enlightened nature. They do not care about politics or power struggles in the human world. Irrational behaviors such as suicide and "self-immolation" are completely opposed to everything that they stand for, and are thus impossible for Falun Dafa practitioners.
