A 680-year-old supernova remnant at about 650 light-years distant. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, or 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers). The snapshot was taken by the aging Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, currently in Earth orbit and slated by NASA to be brought down in a fiery plunge into the Pacific Ocean some time in 2000.
