[PureInsight.org] I used to think my attachment to lust had diminished and, as a result, there was no need for me to put more effort into disciplining myself on this issue.
When looking within recently, however, I found I had not completely eliminated the attachment to lust. In other words, I still had loopholes remaining. For example, when seeing beautiful women on the street, I would often give one more glance. I even found excuses for myself using the proverb “Everyone has his heart in beautiful things.” I often recalled an elderly teacher’s words on this proverb when I was in school, “Everyone has his heart in beautiful things. Even at my age, I often give one more glance when seeing a beautiful woman.”
Through Fa-study, I realized that loving a beauty is a phenomenon in the everyday society. As a practitioner, such a notion is actually a reflection of the attachment to lust. A cultivator has to eliminate such loopholes completely. Furthermore, liking to eat this, not liking to eat that; thinking this person is good, thinking that another person is bad—all these are making judgments based on personal preference. These are attachments caused by sentimentality and we have to eliminate them.
In Zhuan Falun, Master said, “Since human beings have sentimentality, being upset is sentimentality, so are happiness, love, hatred, enjoying doing one thing, resenting doing another thing, preferring one person to another, hobbies, and dislikes. Everything belongs to sentimentality, and everyday people just live for it. Then, as a practitioner and one who rises above and beyond, one should not use this approach to judge things, and one should break away from them.” Our cultivation is a process of constantly looking within. By letting go of human notions, we will have righteous thoughts that lead us all the way to consummation.
