[PureInsight.org] Monica came to my clinic because she had pain in her stomach that had lasted for over two years. It had begun after she had given birth. During delivery, she had to have an episiotomy incision and her doctor had used epidural anesthesia to relieve the pain. Since then, she had constant pain in her stomach, sometimes mild and sometimes severe. There were times when she could not even bend down. Her thighs were painful and she had difficulty even sitting or sleeping. Several days prior to seeing me, her body temperature had suddenly dropped and the pain had become worse. Even though she had taken a lot of medication, it had not helped. Upon arrival at my clinic, she even had to stand while filling in the patient information form. After I examined her, I asked her to lie on the bed facing down. Then I applied fine needles to acupuncture points in her stomach and legs. I instructed her to relax so that the acupuncture treatment could achieve the best result.

While I waited for the needles to take effect, I reflected upon the several cases I had treated due to side-effects of epidural anesthesia. In the past, I thought that this was not a good drug, as there were many side effects associated with it. After I began to practice Falun Dafa, however, I came to a new understanding regarding this issue.

The pain we feel comes from karma. We committed many bad deeds in previous lives, such as hurting or taking advantage of other people. In order for a person to recover from his illness, his karma has to be eliminated.

Bringing a new life into the world is a very painful experience for the mother. Because she has experienced so much difficulty, she will cherish the child even more. Much karma is reduced for the mother in this process, as arranged by heaven. According to Christianity, isn’t it that painful child bearing resulted from Eve’s eating the forbidden fruit?

People do not look at things this way nowadays. With anesthesia, the mother does not have to feel the pain of childbirth and can even choose to have a cesarean-section. In China, some people even pick a lucky date for delivery, regardless of the physical condition of the mother and child. On the surface, this may be considered a medical advancement since the mother suffers less. In fact, mothers lose this opportunity to repay karmic debt. In the case of epidural anesthesia, the mother did not suffer during delivery. Since the karma was not paid back, she may later suffer from stomach pain or something else, which could last even longer.

Similar situations happen with other karma. Many of these cases show up in the form of illnesses. Regardless of if it is Western medicine or Chinese medicine, they just put off the illness. When too much karma accumulates together, the patient may lose his or her life in order to repay the karmic debt. By then, even the best doctor can do nothing about it.

The acupuncture may work well with Monica’s stomach pain, and she may get well soon. But nobody knows if or when it would come back again—since the karma is still there. In Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Dafa, Master Li says, “In order to cure illness or eliminate tribulations and karma, these people must practice cultivation and return to their original, true selves. This is how all the different cultivation schools view it” (Lecture One, “Genuinely Guiding People Toward High Levels”).

I believe this is true, although everyone may have different understandings of this passage.
